Herald of Christ
The Herald of Christ award is the culmination of our Battalion achievement program.
Young men who have worked hard to finish the regular achievements that are available
in Battalion, and who demonstrate personal depth and a desire to grow in Christ may
be given the opportunity to begin this special award. We also have a Herald of Christ
program for Leaders.
The program is an incredible and challenging journey in spiritual formation for teen
guys. It will deepen your faith, help you understand more of what God’s Word teaches,
and provide opportunity for you to put your faith into action.
Below is an overview of what’s involved...
What are the prerequisites?
- The candidate confesses that Jesus Christ is his Savior and Lord (Romans 10:9-10).
- The candidate must have completed Third Star Rank.
- The candidate shows evidence in his life of growth toward Christian maturity and
exhibits no major behaviour or attitude issues.
- The candidate must have passed his 16th birthday.
- The candidate must be actively involved in a local Brigade Unit.
How do I start?
- When you are nearing completion of Third Star, your Captain will discuss this special
challenge with you. If you agree to pursue it he will order the Herald package from
our office.
- Your Captain will contact your Pastor and the CSB Chairman from your church to sit
on your “candidate committee”. When they are all ready proceed to the next step.
- Read through the Herald packet with your committee. Design your internship program
and fill out the application in the packet.
- Send a record of your achievement progress from Observer to Three Star along with
the Herald application to your Regional Director.
- Designate a start date for the program and once confirmation has been received from
CSB you may begin.
- This award must be started before the candidate has reached his 19th birthday, and
be completed no later than his 21st birthday. Please Note: Experience has shown that
specific goals and a timeline of completion will dramatically increase your chances
of actually finishing this challenging journey.
What will I study?
- Bible Study - Do a book report on 9 books of the Bible
- Bible Doctrine - Study four major doctrinal areas: What do they mean? What is their
basis in scripture? Answer doctrinal challenge questions.
- Review your church's and CSB’s “Statement of Faith” with your candidate committee.
- Bible Memorization - over 20 verses.
- Missions Research Project - Select a country and do a background study of life and
customs. Establish contact with at least two missionaries or nationals to keep your
information current and deepen understanding of current conditions. Find out how
you can get involved in service in that country.
- Reading Assignment - Read a book relating to one of three Biblical topics and write
a book review.
What will I do?
- Meet with at least two men who will stretch you to the limit and hold you accountable
throughout the project.
- Share the Gospel with at least one person who doesn’t know Christ as their Savior.
- A three month ministry project in your church or its outreach - From a Sunday school
teacher to usher, from street evangelism to summer camp counsellor, this project
is designed to broaden your appreciation of your church's outreach and ministries.
It must be a minimum of 15 hours total project time, but should average around 36
to 40.
- A three month community project in your home town - From community work crews to
nursing home volunteer, from special events to community education, this project
is designed to acquaint you with the needs and interests of your home town and its
people. It must be a minimum of 15 hours total project time, but should average around
36 to 40.
- Complete the Basic Leadership Training Course - Ask your Captain to contact your
Regional Director to arrange this course.
- Write a 2000-word "Christian Character Essay" - A summation of your life, beliefs,
future goals and work on this project backed by scripture. It is a presentation of
your faith, not a documented research report, and is due one month prior to completion
of the internship program.
- Most importantly, grow in your faith and walk with Jesus!
What happens when I'm done?
- All work including the essay is approved by your candidate committee.
- The essay is sent to your Regional Director to be reviewed and marked.
- You will meet with your committee and the Regional Director for a final meeting to
discuss your work and approve everything you have done or request further revisions.
- Once everything is approved, a date is set for the Herald of Christ presentation
and the candidate committee arranges for a service of celebration.
How can I get more information?
- For more information on the Herald of Christ program, contact our office or your
Regional Director.
